Overview
Watts Going Down is a voluntary peak load reduction program for LIPA customers. Customers who enroll in the program volunteer to reduce energy use on “Critical Days” between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Critical Days are defined periods of high heat and humidity during the summer months. Residential and commercial customers who enlist as Load Reduction Volunteers help reduce energy use by eliminating non-essential electric use during peak demand hours. The Watts Going Down program provides consumer education on power shortage issues during Critical Days, explains the electric power situation on Long Island, and defines ways for customers to efficiently use energy during the summer months. The volunteer program began in 2001 and is still running; however APT was involved in 2003, to assist LIPA in promoting the program to customers, schools and businesses.
Implementation
APT supported the LIPA Watts Going Down program by delivering presentations about the campaign. The goal of the program was to educate businesses and employees about Watts Going Down and encourage them to enroll as volunteers in the program. On behalf of LIPA, APT contacted schools and businesses to solicit their support in advertising the program by displaying Watts Going Down program materials. APT also set up and staffed educational Watts Going Down table displays at various events.
Summary of Results
To date there are more than 20,000 volunteers signed up for the LIPA Watts Going Down program.
